Chiltern Railways, in collaboration with developer Masabi and systems integrator ATOS, has picked up the award for Information Technology Excellence at the Rail Business Awards.
The revolutionary mTicketing system has opened up the mobile ticket buying market not just to users of smartphones, but to most mass market handsets too.
mTicketing is an app that enables rail travellers to check timetables, access live train information and securely purchase then display rail tickets for any national rail train journey. The tickets can then be picked up at the station, or displayed in the app as a barcode or readable ticket that can be checked with handheld scanners or visually at the station gate.
By building applications for the mass-market, including low-end phones as well as high-end phones, the application is specifically designed to give the best experience possible to the largest number of users.
The app launched in May 2011 and Chiltern Railways are the first rail operator to deliver a full barcode ticket system, with a scanner that can reliably scan, decode, decrypt and validate a mobile e-ticket in an average of 240 milliseconds.
Rail Business Awards judge Tony King praised the market credibility of the scheme, which was launched in May 2011, and also commended the fact that it is available to both smartphones and regular mobiles.
Feedback from customers has been positive, and the Chiltern Railways app was made iTunes App of the Week by Apple in June 2011.
